Within cells, glutathione serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxides or conjugate electrophilic compounds to the thiol group. The resulting conjugates can be exported and processed through mercapturic acid pathways. Glutathione also contributes to protein thiol homeostasis and to recycling of other antioxidants such as ascorbate. Its precise roles vary by tissue, and many regulatory effects observed in laboratory systems remain difficult to quantify in whole organisms.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It occurs in nearly all living cells, with highest concentrations in liver, kidney, and red blood cells, and exists in reduced (GSH) and oxidized disulfide (GSSG) forms. The cysteine thiol group enables reversible oxidation and reduction reactions. This property makes glutathione a central participant in cellular redox balance. The balance between these forms is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The first step is rate-limiting and is influenced by cysteine availability and feedback inhibition by GSH. Breakdown involves gamma-glutamyl transferase and subsequent peptidases, which release constituent amino acids for reuse. Because turnover differs among tissues, measurements from blood, plasma, and tissues are not directly interchangeable. Research continues to clarify how compartment-specific pools are regulated in health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It contains an unusual gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate and cysteine, which resists cleavage by many peptidases. The reduced form, GSH, carries a thiol group on cysteine and is the dominant intracellular form in most cells. Its structure allows it to participate in redox reactions and to serve as a sulfur donor. The oxidized form, GSSG, consists of two GSH molecules joined by a disulfide bond.

Russian Victory Day parades are organized annually in most cities, with the central military parade taking place in Moscow (just as during the Soviet times). Additionally, the recently introduced Immortal Regiment on 9 May sees millions of Russians carry the portraits of their relatives who fought in the war. Russia also retains other Soviet holidays, such as the Defender of the Fatherland Day (23 February), International Women's Day (8 March), and International Workers' Day.
Various neurotransmitters, sex steroids, and other hormones have important excitatory or inhibitory effects on the sexual response. Among neurotransmitters, excitatory activity is driven by dopamine and norepinephrine, while inhibitory activity is driven by serotonin. The balance between these systems is of significance for a normal sexual response. By modulating serotonin and dopamine activity in certain parts of the brain, flibanserin may improve the balance between these neurotransmitter systems in the regulation of sexual response.

=== Anhydrous structure === Anhydrous Dy(ClO4)3 crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system, space group P63/m (No. 176). It is isostructural with the anhydrous perchlorates of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho and Er, and belongs to a structure family related to the UCl3 type. In this structure the Dy3+ centres are nine-coordinate. The coordination environment is formed by oxygen atoms belonging to perchlorate groups, which act as multidentate ligands and generate a three-dimensional channel-containing framework. Across the lanthanide series, the lattice parameters decrease systematically because of the lanthanide contraction.

Before the release of the Dexcom G6, users of the Dexcom CGM system had to manually insert the sensor using a syringe-like applicator. This process was often painful, error-prone, and involved multiple steps, requiring up to 11 actions to complete the sensor insertion. As a result, the process was cumbersome and uncomfortable for many users. With the release of the G6 auto-applicator, the design was significantly improved. The updated applicator features a one-touch, one-hand operation, simplifying the process and reducing the steps from eleven to four. It also utilizes a fast needle mechanism that quickly moves in and out of the skin, minimizing discomfort and making the insertion nearly painless. This redesign made the process easier and more accessible, particularly for parents using the system with young children.
All the alkali metals react vigorously with oxygen at standard conditions. They form various types of oxides, such as simple oxides (containing the O2− ion), peroxides (containing the O2−2 ion, where there is a single bond between the two oxygen atoms), superoxides (containing the O−2 ion), and many others. Lithium burns in air to form lithium oxide, but sodium reacts with oxygen to form a mixture of sodium oxide and sodium peroxide. Potassium forms a mixture of potassium peroxide and potassium superoxide, while rubidium and caesium form the superoxide exclusively. Their reactivity increases going down the group: while lithium, sodium and potassium merely burn in air, rubidium and caesium are pyrophoric (spontaneously catch fire in air). The smaller alkali metals tend to polarise the larger anions (the peroxide and superoxide) due to their small size. This attracts the electrons in the more complex anions towards one of its constituent oxygen atoms, forming an oxide ion and an oxygen atom. This causes lithium to form the oxide exclusively on reaction with oxygen at room temperature. This effect becomes drastically weaker for the larger sodium and potassium, allowing them to form the less stable peroxides. Rubidium and caesium, at the bottom of the group, are so large that even the least stable superoxides can form. Because the superoxide releases the most energy when formed, the superoxide is preferentially formed for the larger alkali metals where the more complex anions are not polarised.

==== Papillary region ==== The papillary region is composed of loose areolar connective tissue. This is named for its fingerlike projections called papillae that extend toward the epidermis. The papillae provide the dermis with a "bumpy" surface that interdigitates with the epidermis, strengthening the connection between the two layers of skin.

=== Reforms === In November 2013, at the conclusion of the third plenum of the 18th Central Committee, the Communist Party adopted the Decision on Several Major Issues Concerning Comprehensively Deepening Reform, a far-reaching reform agenda that alluded to changes in both economic and social policy. Xi signaled at the plenum that he was consolidating control of the massive internal security organization that was formerly the domain of Zhou Yongkang. The Central Leading Group for Comprehensively Deepening Reforms—another ad hoc policy coordination body led by Xi upgraded to a commission in 2018—was also formed to oversee the implementation of the reform agenda. Termed "comprehensive deepening reforms", they were said to be the most significant since Deng Xiaoping's 1992 Southern Tour. The plenum also announced economic reforms and resolved to abolish the laogai system of "re-education through labour", which was largely seen as a blot on China's human rights record. The system has faced significant criticism for years from domestic critics and foreign observers. In 2015, Xi announced the Four Comprehensives, namely comprehensively build a moderately prosperous society, deepening reform, governing the nation according to law, and strictly governing the Party; in 2021, at the 100th anniversary of the CCP, Xi declared that China achieved its goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. In January 2016, a two-child policy replaced the one-child policy, which was in turn was replaced with a three-child policy in May 2021.

GSH is the reduced thiol form, while GSSG is the disulfide-linked oxidized dimer. The GSH:GSSG ratio is used as a redox indicator, though the ratio can vary with sample handling and cell type.
Glutathione is present in many foods, including meats, poultry, fish, some vegetables, and fruits. Cooking, storage, and digestion affect the amounts available for absorption.
Yes, both enzymatic steps in glutathione synthesis consume ATP. The first step, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase, is usually rate-limiting.
GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group, while GSSG is the oxidized disulfide-linked dimer. Most assays distinguish the two because their balance reflects redox conditions. The names are not interchangeable.
