Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to complete the tripeptide. The pathway is feedback-inhibited by GSH and limited by cysteine availability, so cysteine supply often constrains production. Once formed, GSH participates in redox buffering, xenobiotic conjugation, and protein glutathionylation. Glutathione peroxidase uses GSH to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, yielding GSSG, while glutathione reductase regenerates GSH using NADPH. Glutathione S-transferases conjugate electrophiles to GSH, supporting detoxification and excretion.
Because GSH is central to redox balance, its status is studied in aging, liver disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and metabolic disorders. Observational studies often report lower GSH or higher GSSG in affected tissues, but such associations do not establish that raising glutathione changes disease outcomes. Oral glutathione is digested into amino acids, and whether intact absorption occurs remains debated; precursors such as N-acetylcysteine and cysteine donors are also investigated. Regulatory agencies generally treat glutathione as a dietary supplement, not an approved drug, and clinical claims require evidence from controlled trials.

Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its glutamate-cysteine linkage uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate, a feature that resists standard peptidases. The cysteine residue provides a thiol group, which gives the molecule its reducing character. In cells, glutathione is often the most abundant small-molecule thiol, with concentrations varying widely by tissue and compartment. It exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH, while oxidation produces a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG.
In cells, glutathione helps maintain the reducing environment of the cytosol and supports enzymes that counteract reactive oxygen species. It acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases, which reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, and for glutathione S-transferases, which conjugate electrophiles. The ratio of GSH to GSSG is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress, although the ratio can vary by compartment and cell type. Glutathione also stores cysteine, an amino acid that can be limiting for protein synthesis and antioxidant defense.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The first step is rate-limiting and is influenced by cysteine availability and feedback inhibition by GSH. Breakdown involves gamma-glutamyl transferase and subsequent peptidases, which release constituent amino acids for reuse. Because turnover differs among tissues, measurements from blood, plasma, and tissues are not directly interchangeable. Research continues to clarify how compartment-specific pools are regulated in health and disease.
Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group. This unusual linkage protects the molecule from many common peptidases. The cysteine side chain carries a thiol group that can undergo reversible oxidation. Because of this thiol, glutathione participates in redox reactions and helps maintain the reducing environment inside most cells in living systems.
The Ukrainian General Staff said that Russia launched sixteen missiles and thirty five Shahed drones at Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine, injuring five people in Kyiv. Ukraine claimed to have shot down all drones. Other attacks occurred in the Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions. Rocket fire was also reported along with airstrikes. Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Colonel Yurii Ihnat said that there were "seven aircraft and up to eight launches of Kh-22 cruise missiles" at Odesa Oblast. Many of the missiles were believed to have self-destructed due to their age. One missile was believed to have hit a food storage warehouse in Odesa starting a fire. The missiles were fired from Tu-22 bombers. The attacks occurred on the eve of celebrations of Victory Day in Russia on 9 May. Russia again blocked grain exports from Ukraine, putting about 90 ships in waiting.
== History == Fujirebio was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1950 under the name Fujizoki Pharmaceutical, Co., Inc. In its early days the company developed and manufactured pharmaceutical products. The company's first IVD test was launched in 1966, a TPHA kit for syphilis testing. In 1983 the company changed name to Fujirebio Inc. Between 1998 and 2010 Fujirebio acquired several specialized IVD companies, notably Centocor Diagnostics (1998), CanAg Diagnostics (2006) and Innogenetics (2010). In 2005, Fujirebio Inc. was integrated together with the commercial laboratories SRL, Inc. ("Special Reference Laboratories", established in 1970) under the holding company Miraca Holdings Inc. (which was renamed to H.U. Group Holdings, Inc. in 2020). The current company structure, Fujirebio Holdings, Inc. was created in 2017 as a parent company of Fujirebio Inc., Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc., Fujirebio Europe N.V. and other Fujirebio group companies. In 2022, Fujirebio acquired respectively the companies ADx NeuroSciences and Fluxus, Inc. In 2025, Fujirebio acquired Plasma Services Group, Inc.
RCO2H + (CH3)3OBF4 → RCO2CH3 + (CH3)2O + HBF4 Although rarely employed for esterifications, carboxylate salts (often generated in situ) react with electrophilic alkylating agents, such as alkyl halides, to give esters. Anion availability can inhibit this reaction, which correspondingly benefits from phase transfer catalysts or such highly polar aprotic solvents as DMF. An additional iodide salt may, via the Finkelstein reaction, catalyze the reaction of a recalcitrant alkyl halide. Alternatively, salts of a coordinating metal, such as silver, may improve the reaction rate by easing halide elimination.
Grade I: Mild ptosis—The nipple is at the level of the infra-mammary fold and above most of the lower breast tissue. Grade II: Moderate ptosis—The nipple is located below the infra-mammary fold but higher than most of the breast tissue hangs. Grade III: Advanced ptosis—The nipple is below the inframammary fold and at the level of maximum breast projection. Pseudoptosis—The nipple is located either at or above the infra-mammary fold, while the lower half of the breast sags below the fold. This is most often seen when a woman stops nursing, as her milk glands atrophy, causing her breast tissue to sag. Parenchymal Maldistribution—The lower breast tissue is lacking fullness, the inframammary fold is very high, and the nipple and areola are relatively close to the fold. This is usually a developmental deformity.

=== Obsessive–compulsive disorder === In Canada, SSRIs are a first-line treatment of adult obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). In the UK, they are first-line treatment only with moderate to severe functional impairment and as second-line treatment for those with mild impairment, though, as of early 2019, this recommendation is being reviewed. SSRIs are more effective than placebo for reducing OCD symptoms and global severity in children and adolescents, and combining them with exposure therapy is probably more effective than using an SSRI alone.
These may include fever, as well as pain or redness at the injection site. Severe allergic reactions occur in about one in a million people. Because it contains live viruses, the MMR vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy but may be given during breastfeeding. The vaccine is safe to give at the same time as other vaccines. Being recently immunized does not increase the risk of passing measles, mumps, or rubella on to others: That is, even though the vaccine contains live viruses, they are not transmitted. There is no evidence of an association between MMR immunization and autistic spectrum disorders. The MMR vaccine is a mixture of live weakened viruses of the three diseases. The MMR vaccine was developed by Maurice Hilleman. It was licensed for use in the US by Merck in 1971. Stand-alone measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines had been previously licensed in 1963, 1967, and 1969, respectively. Recommendations for a second dose were introduced in 1989. The MMRV vaccine, which also covers chickenpox, may be used instead. An MR vaccine, without coverage for mumps, is also occasionally used.
Another measure that made him detested by the indigenous people were the appraisals made in the midst of the war chaos, without control and many times by officials who were members of the Criollo aristocracy or bought by it, which allowed the individual division of their communal lands and their purchase by the landowners, in addition to restoring indigenous tributes, mitas, and pongueajes to help Peruvian finances. Likewise, he restored slavery to blacks, pardos and mulattos (which had been abolished by San Martín) for the benefit of sugar plantations on the coast. Lastly, the old colonial cabildos were abolished. It can also be shown that he would have carried out massive repressions against opponents who had his dictatorship in Peru, such as Juan de Berindoaga y Palomares (who was shot) or Francisco Xavier de Luna Pizarro (who would be deported). Sucre would have commented on several occasions to the Liberator that so many tributes were deceptive, and that many of the Peruvian elite wanted Bolívar's failure to run to negotiate with the royalists. The Bolivarian regime quickly earned the animosity of Peruvians: Bolívar created a Supreme Court that imprisoned or exiled various political opponents, and shot patriotic soldiers or guerrillas who publicly disagreed. The exercise of freedom of the press was prevented and the right to elect their municipal authorities was withdrawn from the councils (May 26, 1826). Over time the Colombian army was seen as the Praetorian Guards of its puppet governments.
Therefore, when observing the nose in profile, the normal show of the columella (the height of the visible nasal aperture) is 2 mm; and the dorsum should be rectilinear (straight). When observed from below (basal view), the alar base configures an isosceles triangle, with its apex at the infra-tip lobule, immediately beneath the tip of the nose. The facially proportionate projection of the nasal tip (the distance of the nose's tip from the face) is determined with the Goode Method, wherein the projection of the nasal tip should be 55–60 percent of the distance between the nasion (nasofrontal junction) and the tip-defining point. A columellar double break might be present, marking the transition between the intermediate crus of the lower-lateral cartilage and the medial crus. The Goode Method determines the extension of the nose from the facial surface by comprehending the distance from the alar groove to the tip of the nose, and then relating that measurement (of nasal-tip projection) to the length of the nasal dorsum (eg, the line from the nasion to the nasal tip). The nasal projection measurement is obtained by delineating a right triangle with lines parting from the nasion (nasofrontal juncture) to the alar–facial–groove. Then, a second, perpendicular delineation, that traverses the tip-defining point, establishes the ratio of projection of the nasal tip; hence, the range of 0.55:1 to 0.60:1, is the ideal nasal-tip-to-nasal-length projection.
=== Internet culture === Owing to his two high-profile campaigns in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries, Sanders and his campaigns have generated many Internet memes and other online content. The Facebook group Bernie Sanders' Dank Meme Stash, where users can submit memes focused around Sanders, received significant attention in the 2016 primary season due to the at-the-time unique idea of a meme community focused entirely on a politician. During the 2020 primary season, a still from a fundraising video in which Sanders tells the viewers "I am once again asking for your financial support" went viral online, with numerous edits made of the frame. The day before Super Tuesday 2020, a video of the Twitch streamer Neekolul wearing a Bernie 2020 shirt and lip-syncing the song "Oki Doki Boomer" also went viral. In 2021, a frame from the inauguration of Joe Biden showing Sanders seated in a folding chair wearing patterned mittens and a jacket reminiscent of the one in the "I am once again asking" meme went viral, with the image captioned or edited into other images, most commonly popular movie scenes. In 2026, Politico named Sanders one of the "biggest social media stars in Congress", alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senator John Kennedy, Senator Rand Paul, and Representative Brandon Gill.

=== Protein Nanocages === Protein nanocages are natural nanocarriers composed of protein subunits with a porous structure. They benefit from monodispersity, intrinsic high stability for protection of internalized drugs from enzymatic degradation and controllable assembly for cargo loading and release. However, their application might be blocked by immunogenicity, broad biodistribution and significant function and property variations. The incorporation of polymer chains by performing in situ ATRP on the outer surface of or inside the protein nanocages can be an effective way to mitigate those drawbacks. For example, increased loading density of cargo molecules and enhanced stability of the cage assembly can be obtained via internal ATRP inside the cavity of the virus capsid. Beyond virus type particles, large multimeric proteins such as the iron storage protein ferritin have emerged as attractive tools to be used as well-defined nano-containers. Using a grafting from strategy, polymers can be introduced to ferritin in a highly regular fashion for precise spatial control. These polymer–ferritin constructs exhibited protease resistance, enabling longer retention time within the bloodstream while reducing possible antibody interactions.
R = universal gas constant m = number of occupied lattice sites per molecule (for polymer solutions m1 is approximately equal to the degree of polymerization and m2=1) φ = volume fraction of the polymer and the solvent, respectively χ = interaction parameter A consequence of the Flory-Huggins theory is, for instance, that the UCST (if it exists) increases and shifts into the solvent-rich region when the molar mass of the polymer increases. Whether a polymer shows LCST and/or UCST behavior can be derived from the temperature-dependence of the interaction parameter (see figure). The interaction parameter not only comprises enthalpic contributions but also the non-ideal entropy of mixing, which again consists of many individual contributions (e.g., the strong hydrophobic effect in aqueous solutions). For these reasons, classical Flory-Huggins theory cannot provide much insight into the molecular origin of miscibility gaps.
The method developed by Bjerrum is still the main method in use today, though the precision of the measurements has greatly increased. Most commonly, a solution containing the metal ion and the ligand in a medium of high ionic strength is first acidified to the point where the ligand is fully protonated. This solution is then titrated, often by means of a computer-controlled auto-titrator, with a solution of CO2-free base. The concentration, or activity, of the hydrogen ion is monitored by means of a glass electrode. The data set used for the calculation has three components: a statement defining the nature of the chemical species that will be present, called the model of the system, details concerning the concentrations of the reagents used in the titration, and finally the experimental measurements in the form of titre and pH (or emf) pairs. Other ion-selective electrodes (ISE) may be used. For example, a fluoride electrode may be used with the determination of stability complexes of fluoro-complexes of a metal ion. It is not always possible to use an ISE. If that is the case, the titration can be monitored by other types of measurement. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy are the most commonly used alternatives. Current practice is to take absorbance or fluorescence measurements at a range of wavelengths and to fit these data simultaneously. Various NMR chemical shifts can also be fitted together.
== Structure and function == The formyl peptide receptor (FPR) belongs to the class of receptors possessing seven hydrophobic transmembrane domains. The conformation of the FPR is stabilized by several interactions. These include potential salt bridge formation between Arg84-Arg205, Lys85-Arg205, and Lys85-Asp284 which help determine the three-dimensional structure of transmembrane domains, as well as positively charged residues (Arg, Lys) which interact with negatively charged phosphates. Furthermore, residue Arg163 may interact with the ligand binding pocket of the second extracellular loop of the FPR. With respect to binding of the formyl Met-Leu-Phe peptide, there are additional potential interactions which include hydrogen bonding interactions between Arg84 and Lys85 of the first extracellular loop and the N-formyl group of the ligand as well as the peptide backbone of formyl Met-Leu-Phe which can form similar interactions. The formyl-Met moiety of the ligand was shown to form disulfide bridges with Cys residues, and an interaction with Arg163 was also demonstrated. (It is important to mention that some interaction which stabilize the conformation of the receptor may also influence ligand-binding.) Some oligopeptides were also described as characteristic constituents linked to Asn-s of the extracellular N terminal part and to the ligand binding pocket of the second extracellular loop. These components can also determine or make more specific the ligand-receptor interaction.

Glutathione oxidizes quickly when cells are disrupted or when samples sit at room temperature. Rapid processing or immediate freezing minimizes the conversion of GSH to GSSG. This step helps ensure that the measured ratio reflects the original biological state.
The Tietze assay is an enzymatic recycling method that measures total glutathione. It uses glutathione reductase to reduce GSSG back to GSH, which then reacts with a chromogen or fluorophore. The reaction cycles repeatedly, amplifying the signal for detection.
Yes, but the choice of blood fraction matters. Plasma or serum contains low glutathione levels and is easily affected by hemolysis. Whole blood mainly reflects the high glutathione content of erythrocytes, so results from different fractions are not directly comparable.
GSH is the reduced, thiol-containing form of glutathione, while GSSG is the oxidized disulfide dimer formed when two GSH molecules react. Cells maintain a high GSH-to-GSSG ratio under normal conditions. A shift toward GSSG is often interpreted as oxidative stress, though sample handling can affect the measured ratio.
