GSSG comes up often in conversation and rarely with the context attached. Here we lay out the basics in order, then work through the practical considerations.

In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.
Commercial glutathione is produced by microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis, then purified. Reduced and oxidized grades are offered separately, with purity specifications often exceeding 98 percent. The compound appears in foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats, although cooking and processing can lower amounts. Oral, topical, and inhaled forms are discussed in research and consumer contexts, but absorption and tissue delivery remain active areas of study. Regulatory status varies by country and intended use.
Commercial glutathione is available in research-grade, food-grade, and supplement-grade forms, and purity specifications differ accordingly. Certificates of analysis commonly report identity by nuclear magnetic resonance or mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Reference standards with assigned purity support calibration, while isotopically labeled glutathione can serve as an internal standard for mass spectrometry. For supplements, label claims may not be independently verified, and regulatory oversight varies by country. Verification often involves third-party testing for identity, potency, and contaminants.
Quantifying glutathione requires distinguishing GSH from GSSG and preventing oxidation during sample preparation. Common approaches include the enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, which measures total glutathione after converting GSSG to GSH. HPLC with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection and LC-MS/MS can separate and quantify both forms, sometimes after derivatization of the thiol group. Blood, plasma, and tissue samples differ in matrix and baseline concentrations, so method validation must account for recovery, linearity, and interference. No single assay is universally standard.

Stability depends on pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, and trace metals. Aqueous solutions of reduced glutathione are susceptible to oxidation, especially when neutral or alkaline and exposed to air. Transition metal ions can catalyze thiol oxidation, so chelators and inert atmospheres are sometimes used in research settings. Standards are typically stored cold and desiccated, with limited freeze-thaw cycles. Questions remain about how closely in vitro stability data reflect the behavior of glutathione within intact cells and tissues.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to oxidation during sample handling, because GSH in biological samples can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides with proteins after collection. Acidic extraction, rapid cooling, and chelating agents are commonly used to limit such changes. Analytical methods usually distinguish free reduced glutathione, total glutathione, and protein-bound forms. Because these forms have different stability and reactivity, reported values depend heavily on the preparation protocol. No single preparation is universally suitable for every biological matrix or analytical goal.
Common analytical approaches include enzymatic recycling assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Enzymatic recycling measures total glutathione after converting GSSG back to GSH, while separation methods can quantify GSH and GSSG separately. Derivatization may be used to improve detection or stability during analysis. LC-MS/MS offers high specificity and can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and adducts. Each method has different sensitivity, throughput, and susceptibility to interference, so method selection depends on the study question and sample matrix.
For solid glutathione reagents, storage at low temperature and protection from moisture and light are typical precautions. Aqueous solutions can oxidize over time, and pH affects stability; alkaline conditions generally promote thiol oxidation. Some protocols prepare fresh solutions, while others use antioxidants or chelators to limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. Purity and counterion content can vary among commercial preparations, affecting concentration calculations. Certificates of analysis and validated assays help verify identity and purity.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation, because GSH can convert to GSSG after sample collection. Blood and plasma samples are often treated with acid or alkylating agents to preserve the reduced form. Without stabilization, apparent GSH concentrations can fall while GSSG rises. Differences in sample type, handling delay, and deproteinization method can produce results that are not comparable across studies. Reporting preanalytical details is therefore important for interpreting findings.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to sample preparation because the molecule oxidizes readily. Blood, tissue, and cell samples are often treated with acid to precipitate proteins and stabilize the thiol. Without such steps, GSH can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides during storage. Analytical methods include spectrophotometric assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Each approach has different sensitivity, specificity, and susceptibility to interference from related compounds in complex matrices.
For solid glutathione, storage conditions affect shelf life. The reduced form is typically kept cool, dry, and protected from air and light. Moisture can promote oxidation, while elevated temperatures accelerate degradation. Suppliers often specify storage at or below freezing, sometimes under inert gas. Solutions are less stable than powders and may require preparation shortly before use. Buffers and chelating agents can slow oxidation, but they do not eliminate it. Published stability data vary with matrix, pH, and container.

David W. Wood (born in 1967) is an American chemical engineer who is professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State University. Wood is also associated with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Training Program. Wood is best known for his work on self-removing affinity tag methods, which he first published in Nature Biotechnology while a Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This method was also patented as a part of a collaboration with co-inventors at the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, including Marlene Belfort, Georges Belfort, Victoria Derbyshire, and Wei Wu.
I have not done anything wrong." Law enforcement made no allegations of wrongdoing against Pritzker, and he has said: "over decades of my life, I have been doing public service, and the opportunity to continue to do public service as treasurer of the state was something that had been brought up, and so there was a conversation about that." Pritzker later apologized for certain comments he made in the recorded conversation. After the recording was released, White continued to support Pritzker in his 2018 gubernatorial campaign and accepted his apology, saying he knew "where his heart is" and "I consider him a very good friend".
==== Torture and abuse at Camp Mercury ==== In September 2005, a Human Rights Watch report alleged that residents of Fallujah called the 1st Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment "the Murderous Maniacs," based on their treatment of Iraqis in detention. According to accounts of 82nd Airborne officers and NCOs, members of the battalion in 2003–2004 routinely used physical and mental torture as a means of intelligence gathering and for stress relief. According to the report, these battalion members estimated "...that about half of the detainees at Camp Mercury were released because they were not involved in the insurgency, but they left with the physical and mental scars of torture." After reporting these abuses yet being ignored by his superiors for 17 months, a then-anonymous captain took his allegations to three senior Republican senators—Bill Frist, John McCain, and John Warner—before the Army was finally compelled to launch an investigation. It was only after his report to the senators that action was taken. A staffer for one of them later told TIME magazine that the captain's claims were "extremely credible." The 1st Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment's torture and abuse of prisoners later inspired the passage of the Detainee Treatment Act, and the anonymous captain was later revealed to be Ian Fishback. When Ian Fishback died in 2021, Senator Dick Durbin called Ian Fishback a military hero, saying:
=== Environmental rehabilitation === When the factory was closed in 1986, pipes, drums and tanks were sold. The MIC and the Sevin plants are still there, as are storages of different residues. Isolation material is falling down and spreading. The area around the plant was used as a dumping area for hazardous chemicals. In 1982, tube wells in the vicinity of the UCIL factory had to be abandoned and tests in 1989 performed by UCC's laboratory revealed that soil and water samples collected near the factory and inside the plant were toxic to fish. Several other studies had also shown polluted soil and groundwater in the area. Reported polluting compounds include 1-naphthol, naphthalene, Sevin, tarry residue, toxic organochlorines, volatile organochlorine compounds, mercury, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, hexachloroethane, hexachlorobutadiene, and the pesticide HCH (Hexachlorocyclohexane). In order to provide safe drinking water to the population around the UCIL factory, the government of Madhya Pradesh proposed a water-supply improvement scheme. In December 2008, the Madhya Pradesh High Court decided that the toxic waste should be incinerated at Ankleshwar in Gujarat, which was met by protests from activists all over India. On 8 June 2012, the centre for incineration of toxic Bhopal waste agreed to pay ₹250 million (US$2.6 million) to dispose of UCIL chemical plants' waste in Germany. On 9 August 2012, Supreme court directed the Union and Madhya Pradesh Governments to take immediate steps for disposal of toxic waste lying around and inside the factory within six months.

In June 2015, the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced that it had been the target of a data breach targeting the records of as many as four million people. Later, FBI Director James Comey put the number at 18 million. The Washington Post has reported that the attack originated in China, citing unnamed government officials. Operation Shady RAT is a series of cyber attacks starting mid-2006, reported by Internet security company McAfee in August 2011. China is widely believed to be the state actor behind these attacks which hit at least 72 organizations including governments and defense contractors. The 2018 cyberattack on the Marriott hotel chain that collected personal details of roughly 500 million guests is now known to be a part of a Chinese intelligence-gathering effort that also hacked health insurers and the security clearance files of millions more Americans, The hackers, are suspected of working on behalf of the Ministry of State Security (MSS), the country's Communist-controlled civilian spy agency. On 14 September 2020, a database showing personal details of about 2.4 million people around the world was leaked and published. A Chinese company, Zhenhua Data compiled the database. According to the information from "National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System", which is run by State Administration for Market Regulation in China, the shareholders of Zhenhua Data Information Technology Co., Ltd. are two natural persons and one general partnership enterprise whose partners are natural persons.
==== The Mariam Appeal ==== In 1998, Galloway founded the Mariam Appeal which was intended, according to its website's welcome page in 1999, "to campaign against sanctions on Iraq which are having disastrous effects on the ordinary people of Iraq". The campaign was named after Mariam Hamza, a child flown by the fund from Iraq to Britain to receive treatment for leukaemia. The intention was to raise awareness of the suffering and death of hundreds of thousands of other Iraqi children, due to poor health conditions and lack of suitable medicines and facilities, and to campaign for the lifting of the Iraq sanctions that many maintained were responsible for that situation. In 1999, Galloway was criticised for spending Christmas in Iraq with Tariq Aziz, who was Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister. In a 17 May 2005 hearing of the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Galloway stated that he had many meetings with Aziz, and characterised their relationship as friendly. He said at another occasion that he and Aziz met more than ten times. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the fund received scrutiny after a complaint that Galloway used some donated money to pay for his travel expenses. He responded by stating that the expenses were incurred in his capacity as the appeal's chairman. Although the Mariam Appeal was never a registered charity and never intended to be such, it was investigated by the Charity Commission.
==== Style periods ==== A broad classification of styles, formalized by Le Coq and Waldschmidt in 1933, has been generally accepted. The first style is called "Indo-Iranian style I", and cover all the early caves with delicate tone-on-tone paintings, using browns, oranges and greens. The name "Indo-Iranian" broadly denotes the artistic influence from India, combined with elements of Iranian art, that presided over the creation of the first cave paintings at Kizil. The main representative caves of this style are the Cave of the Hippocampi (Cave 118), the Cave of the Painters (Cave 207), the Peacock Cave (Cave 76), the Overpainted Cave (Cave 117), the Cave of the Statues (Cave 77), and the Cave of the Seafarers (Cave 112). The small group of the Treasure Cave (Cave 83, 84) is considered as contemporary, but in a slightly personal style, sometimes called "Special Style" (Sonderstil). The first style is only found in Kizil, except for one cave in nearby Kumtura: the Cave with the cupola. The second style is called "Indo-Iranian style II", and cover most of the other caves of Kizil, which use strongly contrasted colors and strong line strokes, using browns, oranges and greens and especially a vivid lapis-lazuli blue. The name "Indo-Iranian" again broadly denotes the artistic influence from India, combined with important influences from Central Asian and the Iranian world. This style is further divided in three broad periods. Finally, a third Uighur-Chinese style appears in only two caves at Kizil.
As a reward for freeing him, the G-Man shows her a vision of her father's death in the future, and offers her the chance to change the outcome. Alyx complies, killing the Advisor and saving her father, and the G-man suspends her in stasis and leaves. Five years later, Freeman regains consciousness at White Forest and is reunited with Eli. Realizing that the G-Man has Alyx, Eli declares his intention to kill him and hands Freeman his crowbar.

and the Justice Department to investigate the contra-drug connection." Other journalists, including James Adams of The New York Times, were critical of Webb's work with his sources. Adams denounced Webb for his failure to contact the CIA and "cross check sources and allegations" and concluded, "For investigative reporters determined to uncover the truth, procedures like these are unacceptable." The series resulted in three federal investigations (by the CIA, the Department of Justice, and the House Intelligence Committee) into the claims of "Dark Alliance." The reports rejected his main claims but were critical of some CIA and law enforcement actions. The CIA report found no evidence that "any past or present employee of CIA, or anyone acting on behalf of CIA, had any direct or indirect dealing" with Ross, Blandón, or Meneses or that any of the other figures mentioned in "Dark Alliance" were ever employed by or associated with or contacted by the agency. The Department of Justice report stated that "We did not find that he [Blandón] had any ties to the CIA, that the CIA intervened in his case in any way, or that any connections to the Contras affected his treatment." The House Committee report examined the support that Meneses and Blandón gave to the local Contra organization in San Francisco and the Contras in general and concluded that it was "not sufficient to finance the organization" and did not consist of "millions," contrary to the claims of the "Dark Alliance" series.
Prohibitin-targeting peptide 1 (also known as prohibitin-TP01 and TP01; trade name Adipotide) is a peptidomimetic with sequence CKGGRAKDC-GG-D(KLAKLAK)2. It is an experimental proapoptotic drug that has been shown to cause rapid weight loss in mice and rhesus monkeys. Its mechanism of action is to target specific blood vessels supplying adipose tissue with blood, cause the vessels to shrink and the fat cells fed by those vessels to undergo apoptosis. TP01 is designed to bind to two receptors, ANXA2 and prohibitin, that are specific to blood vessels supplying white adipose tissue. As of 2019, clinical development has been discontinued.
=== Traumatic === Traumatic vertebral dissection may follow blunt trauma to the neck, such as in a traffic collision, direct blow to the neck, strangulation, or whiplash injury. 1–2% of those with major trauma may have an injury to the carotid or vertebral arteries. In many cases of vertebral dissection, people report recent very mild trauma to the neck or sudden neck movements, e.g. in the context of playing sports. Others report a recent infection, particularly respiratory tract infections associated with coughing. Trauma has been reported to have occurred within a month of dissection in 40% with nearly 90% of the traumas being minor. It has been difficult to prove the association of vertebral artery dissection with mild trauma and infections statistically. It is likely that many "spontaneous" cases may in fact have been caused by such relatively minor insults in someone predisposed by other structural problems to the vessels. A more likely theory, also as yet unproven, is that the low-energy traumatic dissections are actually spontaneous dissections brought to medical attention by the onset of neurological symptoms. These neurological events represent embolic phenomena due to loosening or breakdown of the clot at the site of the dissection, which can be triggered by low energy trauma or even occur spontaneously. The fragments travel within the arterial system downstream to the brain to cause stroke or stroke-like symptoms. Vertebral artery dissection has also been reported in association with some forms of neck manipulation.
With the help of Charles Stearn, an expert on vacuum pumps, in 1878, Swan developed a method of processing that avoided the early bulb blackening. This received a British Patent in 1880. On 18 December 1878, a lamp using a slender carbon rod was demonstrated at a meeting of the Newcastle Chemical Society though it only worked for a few minutes. Swan repeated the demonstration at another meeting on 17 January 1879 where it worked successfully. It was shown to 700 who attended a meeting of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne on 3 February 1879. The society's building was the first public building to be lit by electricity. The lamps Swan demonstrated used a carbon rod from an arc lamp rather than a slender filament. Thus they had low resistance and required very large conductors to supply the necessary current, so they were not commercially practical, although they furnished a demonstration of the possibilities of incandescent lighting with relatively high vacuum, a carbon conductor, and platinum lead-in wires. This bulb lasted about 40 hours. Swan then turned his attention to producing a better carbon filament and the means of attaching its ends. He devised a method of treating cotton to produce 'parchmentised thread' in the early 1880s and obtained British Patent 4933 that same year. From this year he began installing light bulbs in homes and landmarks in England. His house, Underhill, Low Fell, Gateshead, was the first in the world to be lit by a lightbulb. In the early 1880s he had started his company.

It is a tripeptide rather than a full protein. Proteins generally contain many amino acids joined by alpha-peptide bonds, while glutathione has three residues and an unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage. That structure affects how enzymes recognize and break it down.
GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group. GSSG is the oxidized disulfide dimer formed when two GSH molecules react. The GSH-to-GSSG ratio is used in research as one indicator of cellular redox conditions.
Yes, it is present in many animal and plant tissues, including meats, some vegetables, and fruits. Heat, storage, and processing can reduce its content, so measured amounts vary widely.
The ratio depends on rapid separation or blocking of GSH before oxidation occurs. GSSG can be formed ex vivo if samples are not processed quickly in cold, acidic conditions. Even small delays can shift the apparent ratio, making standardized protocols essential.
